Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen
Olympe de Gouges challenged the lack of equality for women found in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen promulgated by the National Assembly in 1789, the fundamental statement of equality of the French Revolution. Her campaign on behalf of women's rights led to her execution on a charge of treason during the Reign of Terror in 1793.
