The present volume rectifies the limited access to Hughes’s short non-
fiction by reprinting most of the essays, speeches, introductions to edited volumes, book reviews, published letters to editors, and brief miscellaneous pieces that he wrote over the course of his long career. Every attempt has been made to catalog and locate all of the essays Hughes published during his lifetime and include them in this volume or in the companion volume on civil rights.
