"TARTUFFE, RELIGION, AND COURTLY CULTURE" by Emanuel ChillThe article focuses on the famous Company of the Holy Sacrament, a secret organization of priests and laymen. This organization is widely recognized as having been a leading participant in the social action of the French Counter Reformation. This was founded toward the close of the 1620's by followers of Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle. The Company, known to its victims and critics as the cabale des dévots, enlisted prominent nobles, magistrates and officials, as well as religious figures. During 1640's it extended its network of provincial branches to most of the French kingdom and promoted systematic projects for charitable assistance, for religious observance, and for the repression of various forms of lower-class indiscipline and disorder. This was done through literary and comedy plays like Tartuffe.
