Trapped in Patriarchy: A Comparative Analysis of Female Oppression in “The Yellow

Wallpaper” and The Awakening

Samia Mehbub, TLC Writing Specialist, graduate student in English at UCF; Mentor, Dr. Keith Cavedo

Abstract: This research paper compares the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" and the short novel The Awakening, both written within a few years of each other in the 1890s, revealing how patriarchal oppression confines female identity and autonomy. Through the protagonists' psychological and emotional struggles, the two narratives critique societal norms by exposing the damaging effects of rigid gender roles on women’s mental health, self-expression, and pursuit of freedom.
